I’ve never participated in a medical study before, although I taught about them as an instructor in healthcare administration. In this blog, I will share my experiences throughout a six-month study. This is the first installment.

When I was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, my knowledge of the condition was limited to the fact that Michael J. Fox had it. Faced with this new reality, I realized I needed to immerse myself in the world of Parkinson’s, as this was now a part of my life. While Parkinson’s doesn’t define who I am, it is an undeniable fact that I live with a progressive neurological disorder.

Understanding that the progression of Parkinson's can only be managed through exercise, I sought out ways to stay active, despite never having been interested in sports. That’s when I discovered Rock Steady Boxing, an exercise program tailored for individuals with Parkinson’s. I quickly fell in love with boxing and appreciated the structured classes designed specifically for those with the disease.

After retiring, I chose to give back by volunteering at the RSB gym, Hope In Your Corner. Two days a week, I assist in classes for individuals with more advanced symptoms, which has been incredibly rewarding.

With my commitment to taking three classes a week and volunteering two days, I find myself surrounded by others living with Parkinson’s. Each person's journey is unique, and being in this community is both comforting and inspiring.

Every year, I participate in fundraising for Parkinson’s Moving Day, a walk benefiting the Parkinson’s Foundation. So far, I’ve raised over $1,000 each year to support this important cause.

Currently, I am also volunteering for a study at UCSF that investigates the potential of psychedelic mushrooms in treating depression related to Parkinson’s. The nature of depression in PD is distinct, largely due to the progressive decline in dopamine levels.

Maintaining an optimistic outlook is essential for my mental well-being, and I genuinely believe that Parkinson’s Disease has been a blessing in disguise. It has given my life renewed purpose and direction.
