Birds try to sing—

Swallowed by

The clash outside:

Engines roaring

Horns shouting

Sirens slicing air

Dogs barking

Leaves whipped wild

Children scream-laugh

Tires skid

A crash

Then silence,

Then more

Then

a breeze

the hush of leaves

Then birds, still singing
